Walk-in Showers in Barrie

Short answer

A custom walk-in shower replaces a cramped stall or unused bathtub with a fully waterproofed tiled enclosure, 10 mm frameless glass, recessed niches and a built-in bench or fold-down seat. In Barrie, our 9 x 12 ft four-piece ensuite labour package with a curbless walk-in shower starts at $11,500.

Where custom walk-in showers make the biggest difference in Barrie homes

If you have been thinking about replacing a cramped shower stall or an unused bathtub in your Barrie home, a custom tiled walk-in shower is one of the most practical ways to make the most of your space. Across Barrie, calls for custom walk-in showers usually start with one of two rooms. In Holly, Ardagh Bluffs, Painswick and Little Lake, two-storey homes built in the 1990s and 2000s almost always have a four-piece primary ensuite where a large corner soaker tub on a tiled deck sits beside a tight 32- or 36-inch acrylic shower stall. Clearing out both the bulky corner tub platform and the narrow stall frees up a long wall for a generous frameless-glass walk-in shower with a bench, recessed niches and dual shower heads.

In Allandale, Eastview, Sunnidale and Letitia Heights, the goal is often replacing a 60-inch alcove bathtub with a bright, easy-entry shower—like our monochrome walk-in shower with body jets case study and our navy shaker vanity and walk-in glass shower remodel.

If you are planning ahead for safe mobility or adapting a bungalow for an older parent, adding a curbless or low-profile entry, a fold-down or tiled seat, a slide-bar hand shower and solid wood blocking behind the tile for grab bars is straightforward while the walls are open. Designing your Barrie walk-in shower

Curbless (zero-threshold) vs. low-curb entry

In a curbless shower, the main bathroom porcelain continues level into the wet zone without any threshold step. That step-free entry opens up the room visually, simplifies mopping, and removes the tripping ledge at the door. Because water still needs a 2% pitch to reach the drain, our carpenters either recess the subfloor between the joists or raise the outer bathroom floor slightly. On a wood-framed second floor in Barrie, we inspect joist depth, span and orientation before confirming a recessed curbless pan.

A low-curb shower sets a slim 3-to-4-inch quartz-capped or tiled curb beneath the glass door. Because it sits on top of the existing subfloor without modifying floor joists, it works cleanly on any second-floor layout and keeps carpentry costs lower.

Linear trench drains vs. centre point drains

A linear channel drain runs along one wall or across the entry threshold so the entire shower pan slopes in one flat plane. That single-plane pitch lets us continue large-format porcelain slabs straight across the shower floor without cutting four-way diagonal lines. A centre point drain pitches from all four sides toward the middle, pairing naturally with 2-inch hexagon or square mosaic tile for high wet traction underfoot—as shown in our clawfoot soaking tub and glass shower case study.

10 mm frameless glass, lit niches and benches

Depending on your Barrie bathroom dimensions, we fit a fixed walk-in glass splash screen, a hinged frameless door and side panel, or sliding frameless doors with matte-black, brushed-brass or chrome hardware. Our glazier laser-measures every enclosure after the wall porcelain is grouted so the 10 mm tempered glass fits out-of-plumb walls without heavy metal channels.

Inside the wet zone, we frame recessed shampoo niches aligned with your tile courses—with optional warm LED strip lighting—and build solid waterproofed corner or window benches.

You choose the finish materials—porcelain or stone tile, the linear or point drain, mixing valve and trim, and custom glass—separately so you have full control over fixture style and budget. When we convert a tub alcove or rebuild just the shower enclosure while leaving your vanity and toilet in place, we price the work line by line; a complete curbless accessible shower conversion of ours averages around $15,000 all-in. Seven steps behind a leak-free tiled shower

  1. Demolition to bare studs. Our crew lays hallway protection and strips out the old stall, tub deck, tile and drywall down to the framing.
  2. Subfloor and joist check. We check the plywood subfloor for old moisture damage, stiffen framing, and recess the floor if building a curbless pan.
  3. Rough-in plumbing. Our plumber fits a new pressure-balanced or thermostatic mixing valve, diverter and dedicated 2-inch shower drain trap.
  4. Niches, bench and blocking. We frame recessed shampoo niches and benches, bolt 2x8 lumber blocking between studs for glass hinges and grab bars, and install waterproof backer board.
  5. Continuous bonded waterproofing. We bond a continuous sheet waterproofing membrane across every shower wall, sloped pan, curb, niche and bench, sealing all corner bands and the drain flange.
  6. Tile setting and grouting. Wall slabs and floor tile are set with levelling clips to your approved drawings, grouted, and sealed with flexible 100% silicone at all corners.
  7. Plumbing trim and custom glass. We mount the rainfall head, hand wand and valve trim, then laser-measure and install the custom 10 mm tempered glass panels. Read more on our renovation process page.

City of Barrie permits and second-floor framing

Relocating or altering a shower drain requires a permit. Rebuilding a shower in the exact same location on an existing 2-inch drain trap does not require a City of Barrie building permit. Moving the drain across the floor—for instance, when combining a corner tub and stall into one larger shower—or altering drain and water piping is a plumbing change that requires a City of Barrie building permit via the APLI portal. Engineered joists vs. concrete slabs. Many 2000s homes in Holly, Painswick and Little Lake use engineered wood I-joists upstairs, which cannot be notched without an engineered detail. During our on-site measurement visit we check your floor joists and confirm whether a recessed curbless pan or a slim low-profile curb is the safest structural fit. When building a lower-level basement bathroom, saw-cutting the concrete slab makes a curbless entry straightforward.

Walk-in Showers: common questions

What is the difference between a curbless shower and a low-curb walk-in shower?

A curbless shower runs the main bathroom floor tile flush into the shower pan with zero step, making it effortless to step or wheel into, though it requires recessing the floor framing so the pan still slopes to the drain. A low 3-to-4-inch tiled curb sits above the subfloor, keeping framing simpler and reducing labour cost.

When does a linear trench drain make sense over a centre drain?

A linear channel drain lets the entire shower floor pitch in a single flat plane toward one wall, allowing large-format porcelain tiles to continue straight into the shower without four-way diagonal cuts. A centre point drain slopes from all four sides and pairs best with 2-inch mosaic floor tiles.

Why is custom 10 mm frameless shower glass measured after the tile is set?

Tempered 10 mm glass panels cannot be trimmed or drilled once they leave the tempering furnace. Our glazier laser-measures the finished tiled opening after the curb and walls are grouted, fabricates the glass to the millimetre, and returns to mount the hinges and clear seals.

How do you waterproof a tiled walk-in shower behind the porcelain?

Because ceramic tile and grout slowly absorb moisture, we build every shower enclosure with waterproof backer board, bond a continuous sheet membrane over every wall joint and screw hole, and seal the pan liner directly into the drain flange and mixing valve before setting a single tile.
